Explorer series gets even better with a new addition

Ford has released details of the new cars for sale in the 2022 Explorer line, and this year is no mere refresh. When you head to a new car dealership in Oklahoma for a 2022 Explorer, you’ll be presented with more options than ever, including the new ST-Line Explorer that takes all of its design cues from the performance ST but costs $7,570 less.

First, let’s look at the changes that we’ll see across the Explorer lineup. Burgundy Velvet and Stone Blue are the new color options for this year, and all Explorers will have the option of captain’s seats or benches in the second row at no extra charge. This is particularly new for the Timberline model, which didn’t have a bench seat option in previous years.

If you choose a King Ranch or Platinum, you’ll be getting a new 400-horsepower powertrain as standard. Inside, things have gotten more sophisticated, too, with the addition of multi-contour seats, a 10-inch touchscreen, and a Bang and Olufsen 14-speaker sound system all included as standard.

Enter the Ford Explorer ST-Line

For the first time, the Ford Explorer will get an ST-Line model that the Ford Edge has had since 2020. If you’re not aware, the ST-Line is an appearance-based trim that takes all of the great performance-inspired style from the lush ST model yet keeps out of the performance enhancements. It makes for a great buy for someone who wants an Explorer that looks super sporty but doesn’t really need all of the more pricey changes that the ST makes to boost performance.

You can consider the ST-Line to be above the XLT trim in the Explorer lineup. You get rear-wheel drive as standard, but all-wheel drive is always available as an option if you prefer. The ST-Line comes with a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine that’s capable of outputting 300 horsepower, and this is paired with the smooth-switching 10-speed automatic transmission.

Check out the 20-inch machine wheels, blackout headlights and taillights, fascia-integrated dual exhaust tips, and the smooth, blacked-out grille. Without looking extremely closely, it’s not possible to tell the difference between the ST-Line and the ST, so it could save you a cool $7,570 if you choose the new trim level.

There’s more, too. Inside, the ST-Line Explorer is tricked out in superb Ebony Black ActiveX-trimmed seats with Miko inserts, red accent stitching, heated seats, and a sport-style steering wheel.

Optionally, you can add a 12-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system, wireless charging pad, 360-degree camera, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The ST-Line can be a luxury SUV without the luxury price tag.

Explorer ST gets rear-wheel-drive

Enthusiasts have often asked for a rear-wheel-drive-only version of the Explorer ST, and now it’s available. Of course, the four-wheel drive is also on the cards, but buyers can now make the choice for themselves so they get the perfect Explorer for their needs.

The Explorer ST is the vehicle we recommend to drivers who like a high-performance vehicle. It has a muscular 3.0-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost engine that will output 400 horsepower and 415 pounds per foot of torque. The ST has a unique sport-tuned independent front and rear suspension, hill descent control, and a terrain management system with intelligent 4WD. The open image overlay shows you exactly the terrain you’re dealing with, so you can be confident driving the Explorer ST wherever you want to go.

The ST can also benefit from third-row PowerFold seats. You also get a complete suite of driver assistance tools, from a blind-spot information system to a lane-keeping system.
